About Home Health Nursing
The Guild has been operating its nursing program since 1941. Originally staffed by four Sisters of the Congregation of the Holy Infant of Jesus, the Sisters concluded their ministry at the Guild after three decades of service and the program was continued by lay nurses. Today the program remains under the supervision and is staffed by professionally trained lay nurses and a certified home health aide.
Home Health Nursing Services primary goal is to provide long term home-based nursing care to the most medically needy and economically disadvantaged senior citizens of Mercer County in order to prevent premature placement into an institutional setting.
It is a sad reality that a good number of our patients do not have medical coverage for home based nursing care. Without our program, they would not receive the nursing care they require to maintain their physical well-being. On an annual basis our three nurses and one home health aide make over 4,000 in-home visits in order to ensure that our patients remain medically stable and continue to reside in the community.
Our nurses also provide more to our patients than just skilled medical care. They provide comfort and companionship to those who are lonely and arrange transportation to and from medical appointments. At the end of the month, our nurses will provide emergency food packages from our Emergency Assistance program for anyone who is short of food and on a fixed income.
The following are some of the critical services provided:
- Pre-fill insulin syringes
- Pre-pour medications
- Monitor vital signs and blood sugars
- Conduct pacemaker checks
- Give injections
- Wound and Colostomy care
Home health aide provides personal care, bathing, light housekeeping and assistance with meals.
Success of the Program
Demand for our services continues to increase. This past year our nursing staff made 4,053 in-home visits. The goals of the nursing program are:
- Increase medical stability among Mercer County senior citizens
- Decrease premature placement into nursing homes and other institutions
- Maintain our level of service to the community
The home health nursing services program operates Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.
